Knowledge and Attitudes About Family Planning and Sexually Transmitted Diseases of First Year Medical Students

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to asses the knowledge and attitude about family planning and sexually transmitted diseases of first year students in Gazi University Medical Faculty. METHODS: This study was conducted by public health residents of Medical Faculty. A questionnaire form was applied under observation to 167 students of Gazi University Medical Faculty. RESULTS: Self reported level of knowledge about family planning were % 39.8 sufficient, % 52.4 little sufficient, % 7.8 unsifficient. Student’s family planning definitions were % 47.9 “ to get childeren that can to take care of”, % 23.4 “ to get healthly childeren”. Most common methods that had been heared by students were oral contraceptive ( % 98.8 ), condom ( % 97.5 ), intra uterin device ( % 76.5 ). Students % 92.7 of the reported that “family planning methods to became widespreead have to be supported”, “ family planning education have to be applied in high school” (% 76.7). Self reported knowledge level about sexually transmitted diseases of the students were, % 19.6 sufficient, % 63.5 little sufficient, % 16.9 insufficient. CONCLUSIONS: This study points the need of knowledge about family planning methods and sexually transmitted diseases for first year medical students.
